How many people in the United States were registered to be adult volunteer marrow donors? How many people received bone marrow and cord blood transplants last year? This section provides at-a-glance statistics on donor registry, transplants performed, and transplant outcomes.
Statistics at a glance
- The donor registry contains more than 9.5 million potential donors in the U.S.
- More than 270,000 cord blood units are on the registry. This total includes more than 122,000 units from the National Cord Blood Inventory (NCBI), with more than 200 NCBI units added in 2023.
- In 2021, 5,073 unrelated and 4,276 related bone marrow and cord blood transplants were performed in the United States and reported to CIBMTR.
More than 148,000 cord blood units on the registry in 2023 were from donors who identified their racial or ethnic background as:
- American Indian or Alaska Native
- Asian
- Black or African American
- Hispanic or Latino
- Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander

A total of 22,827 HCTs were performed in the United States and reported to CIBMTR in 2021. Of these, 5,073 (22%) were unrelated transplants and 4,276 (19%) were related transplants.
Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) were the most frequently used cell source for all patients in 2021. Bone marrow was used more frequently in patients whose donor was related to them than patients who had an unrelated donor transplant. Umbilical cord blood was used more for patients who had an unrelated donor.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of the unrelated HCTs and 53% of the related HCTs performed in the United States and reported to CIBMTR in 2021 were for White non-Hispanic recipients.
